The aim of the project is to manufacture a welding machine which simplifies the work and improve the accuracy. The working principle of this machine is same as that of other spot welding machine. The work piece is held in the hand between two electrodes and pedal is pressed. Thus the upper arm moves down and welding takes place. After the buzzer signals, the pedal is released and finished work is taken out. The working principle is very easy and at the same time production time is very much reduced. This machine is best suitable for mass production.


Welding is a process of joining similar metals by the application of heat. Welding can be done with or without the application of pressure. While welding, the edges of metal pieces are either melted or brought to plastic condition. Welding can be done with the addition of filler materials or without it welding is used for making permanent joints. It is used in the manufacture of automobile bodies, aircraft frames, railways wagons, machine frames, structural work, tanks, furniture, boilers, general repair work and ship building. At most in all metal working industries welding is used.


Welding is define by the American Welding Society (AWS) as “A materials joining process used in making welds”.  A weld is defined as “A localized coalescence of metals as non-metals produced either by heating the materials to suitable temperatures, with or without the application of pressure and with or without the use of filter materials.”

Two pieces are welded together due to the pressure exerted by the two electrodes, which are connected to the lower and upper arms, where the upper arm is movable and the lower arm is stationary.


The electrode is fitted in electrode holder and electrode holder is fitted to the upper arm with hylam sheets for insulation.  The upper arm is connected to pedal by means of connecting rod.  The spring is connected to the connecting rod so that it makes the upper arm to move up and down.  The electronic weld controller is used in this machine.  The timer T₁, weld control switch, timer T₂, is fitted to it.  The 3KVA transformer is used.  The upper and the lower is connected to AC supply.


The work piece is placed in between upper and the lower electrode.  Then weld switch is on, the current flows through the circuit.  When the pedal is pressed the upper arm moves down and weld takes place.  When current passes through the circuit, the electronic weld controller, timer T₁, timer T₂, which are already adjusted indicates about the operation and finally buzzer sounds, which indicates the completion of process.  Then the pedal is released thus electrode also released and work piece are thus welded.  When the pedal is released before completing the process, process stopped.  Only after the buzzer sounds the pedal has to be released.


  1. The work piece welded in the spot welding machine is not irregular as in case of arc welding.
  2. It is an accurate method.
  3. As the time is used the correct time of welding can be noted and the work piece is welded without any damage.
  4. It is better used for mass production.
  5. In future the pneumatic can be set in this machine and machine becomes fully automatic.
  6. It does not need skilled operator.
  7. It increases the production.
  8. It decreases the cost of production.
  9. It is an easy method of welding.
  10. Work pieces welded would have a good approach.


Welding is used extensively in the manufacture of farm equipment, home applications, computer components, mining equipment and earth moving equipment, railway equipment, furnace, boilers air conditioning units and hundreds of other products also make use of welding to fasten parts together.
Spot welding machine are ideally suitable for sheet metal work Drums Barrels Electrical and Electronics instruments, Radio and Communication Equipments, Furniture, Automobile assembly, Air conditioners, artificial jewelers, Spectacle frames and several other applications.
