Therefore there is a tremendous scope/ opportunity for design engineers.You need to know the know how of the “latest software” (software skills like:- auto cad, ansys, solid works, etc.) available in the area of design engineering.
Skill Set For Mechanical Design Engineers :
1. Meticulous subject knowledge:
Even if you are in final year, keep on reading about your basics from 2 nd and 3rd year. It is going to help. If your core subject knowledge is good, your interviews will be impressive and you’ll be able to appreciate the details of machine design, materials and associated knowledge with it. Try to learn about standards used in the industry, like ASME, ASTM, ISO etc. Be very strong at engineering graphics and machine design. If your knowledge set is big, then only you’ll be treated as a resource person.
2. Develop an interest in CAD and simulation tools:
Give emphasis on learning few tools related to CAD, like CATIA V5, Solidworks, Pro – E, Unigraphics, etc. You can invest money in leaning softwares and try to get certificates for. You can even try doing small projects on your own with CAD and analysis softwares. Your resume will be strong. If you can learn any Analysis and simulation tool like Ansys, Matlab it’ll be very useful.
3. Knowledge of materials:
Designer should well aware about the material properties and its application . He Should also know the processes lie heat treatment , powder coating carried on the material.
4. Industrial Drawing and its standard
Designer should required drafting skill, every single details have to given on drawing sheet to avoid confusion on shop floor . Machine designer must be well aware about geometric tolerances , Fit and Limits . c
5. knowledge of Mechatronics :
Engineers who are keen to specialize in mechatronics often deal with control systems engineering. For control system design, one needs to be well versed with MATLAB/Simulink. I found it useful while simulating the motion of an exoskeleton using a reference signal generated from the biomechanical data of a person walking on the level ground.
6. If you are trying in CAE field you must master in mathematics behind the software so that you have extra edge than just operating the software . Result interpretation and corrective action skill you must develop in CAE field .
7. You must have good command over your language with self confidence and presentation skills that you can convey your thoughts to viewer may be seniors or clients.
Mechanical engineering includes creating and designing products, which extend from batteries to electric generators to medical gadgets. The invention of products includes a great deal of imagination and creativity.
9. The ability to work under pressure :
Being able to successfully work under pressure is about being able to priorities the most important task that you need to finish. It’s about being able to work to the best of your ability when you have a tight deadline or lots to complete. Most of all, it about being to maintain a sense of calm and order when you feel like work is getting on top of you.
10 .Optimization :
He must learn to optimize i.e reduce time and money as well as reduce wastes. Technically industrial engineers are also mechanical engineers in broad sense.
11. Aesthetics and Ergonomics Knowledge :
He must also take into consideration whether it can look aesthetic i.e the product must be marketable, he must work think like a sales person too.
12. He must look into the safety and regulations of the product/service i.e the service/product must not be harmful, he must think as a safety engineer
