What is Generative Design – Generative Design Software

Generative Design ?

Generative design is a form finding process that can mimic nature’s evolutionary approach to design. It can start with design goals and then explore innumerable possible permutations of a solution to find the best option. By using cloud computing, generative design can cycle through thousands—or even millions—of design choices, test configurations and learn from each iteration what works and what doesn’t. The process can enable designers to generate brand new options, beyond what a human alone could create, to arrive at a most effective design.

With generative design, a designer simply enters his or her goals and constraints into the computer software. Once design parameters are defined for a specific project – for example, four legs, an elevated seat on a specific height, weight requirements, given materials – the software goes to work.

Employing evolutionary algorithms, generative design software uses predetermined criteria to produce thousands, possibly millions, of optimised options for a single design, using complex forms with precise amounts material, exactly where needed. The software creates optimised lattice structures that far exceed the performance of traditional configurations.

Most generative design, in which the output could be images, sounds, architectural models, animation etc., is based on algorithmic and parametric modeling. It is a fast method of exploring design possibilities that is used in various design fields such as art, architecture, communication design, and product design.

Typically, generative design has:

  • A design schema – Designer or Engineers has to define constrains , variables such as weight ,mass , height ,area material etc.
  • A means of creating variations – Computer software uses algorithms and its own reasoning to generate numbers of solutions and also run performance analysis of each model .
  • A means of selecting desirable outcome –  Designers / engineers studies options and modifies goals and constraints .Computer regenerates. Human intuition and computational artificial intelligence ( AI)  identify most relevant solution.

Generative Design, in particular, an algorithmic approach, is an efficient, rigorous, controllable, and flexible tool that allows, with reduced time and effort, the production of several different models to explore design variations addressing different types of change.

  1. Project Dreamcatcher- Project Dreamcatcher is a research platform for generative design By AutoDesk. Opens in a new tab.

The Dreamcatcher system allows designers to input specific design objectives, including functional requirements, material type, manufacturing method, performance criteria, and cost restrictions. Loaded with design requirements, the system then searches a procedurally synthesized design space to evaluate a vast number of generated designs for satisfying the design requirements. The resulting design alternatives are then presented back to the user, along with the performance data of each solution, in the context of the entire design solution space. Designers are able to evaluate the generated solutions in real time, returning at any point to the problem definition to adjust goals and constraints to generate new results that fit the refined definition of success. Once the design space has been explored to satisfaction, the designer is able to output the design to fabrication tools or export the resulting geometry for use in other software tools.

2. Autodesk  Within Medical:

Autodesk, a leader in 3D design, engineering, and entertainment software, unveiled Within Medical, a generative design software that optimized 3D printing of medical implants for the orthopedic industry. Within generative design software solutions help engineers and orthopedic implant specialists produce lightweight, latticed designs that are optimized and accurate for additive manufacturing. (Below: Conformal lattices: Quickly conform lattices along surfaces for custom implants.)

Within Medical orthopedic implant design software helps users create medical implants optimized for 3D printing. Generate micron-accurate rough lattice surfaces to aid fixation with bone and improve osseointegration using porous random lattices and lattice topologies to encourage cell growth.
